PIE FOR THE WIN

Epic Fail

You used to be able to watch the new episodes of BSG the day after they were first aired. Now it seems they stopped posting the new ones AND deleted all but three of the old ones.

This is full of cancer and madness.

Addendum: a coincidentally topical post from the same blog.

You know what’s missing?

Pie, that’s what!

Cake is no substitute for pie, that is true, but when you are all dealing with no pie and need dessert anyway (which is always the case) sometimes you have to settle and eat something other than pie.

One of the better things for settling with is cake, especially if it is the kind of cake that is a chocolate cake.

Last night I cooked a big bird (not THAT one, though, so don’t be all upset kids!) on a grill.  It was called a Guinea Fowl, or at least it was until I had cooked it because then it was on a plate and called dinner!  Haha, this is a good time to add, LOL,  since I am sure that is what you are doing, just like me!  But anyway, what I did was brine it in the following: water, salt, sugar, a garlic clove cut into 3 pieces, whole black pepper, fennel seed, fresh rosemary, fresh thyme.  And then one of my friends cooked some spinach, and then I also made couscous with sliced almonds, currants, ground coriander, and some chicken broth.  And then I also made a tomato salad, which is just like a regular salad, but it has no lettuce and instead has 3 different kinds of tomatoes, which are heirloom tomatoes so they look all weird until you cut them but then they look awesome.  And some coarse sea salt and olive oil and a little red onion and then finally some fresh mint.  And THAT is all kinds of win, in a big way.

So getting back to cake (haha I bet you thought I forgot!), we had a “chocolate truffle cake” from this bakery I forget the name of.  If you are wondering why I used quotes, it’s because the cake was not made of fungus, duh.

I wish I had a picture but I don’t so both you and I will have to just cope.

Also, coffee is way better when you grind it yourself.

My friend is supposed to pick me up soon to go on a scavenger hunt, but she’s not here yet.  Sounds like she’s the thing that should be the thing you are supposed to hunt (because she’s not here, not because you are supposed to kill your friend like that short story where they hunt people on island that they stole the idea for and made a movie with Ice Cube or Ice T or possibly both of those guys).

The REAL Ultimate Power

This pie does not flip out and kill people, but it is pretty much as awesome as a ninja but without a sword or two.

My grandmother’s recipe for pumpkin pie is full of win, to be sure. I make it a little differently, with a bit more nutmeg, and I tend to be more anal on the pastry crust, which I make with more folds to make it even flakier (though it is based on her recipe). It’s also remarkably useful to have a stand mixer for the first stage of the crust preparation–the butter and flour blend much more evenly than by hand.

I’ve had a lot of pumpkin pie because it is my favorite type of pie I think, but this is the best of all those pies. I promise to share the recipe sometime. But you will just have to guess about when that time is.

P.S. The pumpkin pie from Chow was really disappointing–it was overcooked (the filling was dry) and the spice-fat balance was all wrong. It made me want to cry because I am all emo about pie.

P.P.S. I may be all emo about pie but I don’t wear black eye makeup since I’m not a girl so there.

Understanding

Some people ask me why I always talk about pie.

What I tell them is, “I’m sorry your parents didn’t hold you.”

Not a pie.

This is not a pie, but it was delicious. What this is is a chimichanga, covered with mole.

Did you know that chimichangas are not from Mexico? They are burritos that someone fried and they were invented in Arizona.

:-(

Often, when I don’t have any pie, it makes me sad.

This is one of those times.

First post.

I made this new blog. It’s going to be all about pie, which is the greatest thing ever.

If you like pie, you will like this blog.
